Home Buying Tips for Newlyweds: Choosing Your First Home in Raleigh
Your home is one of the most expensive purchases you will ever make, so it’s important to take your time and consider your options carefully. Below are some of our best home-buying tips for new couples.
- Lock down your “wants” and “needs.” Do you want to be close to a school, hospital, or office? Do you want 3 bedrooms, or 5? Know ahead of time which details are must-haves, and which are open to compromise.
- Know what you can afford. Review your existing bills and financial obligations, and compare it to your income to understand how much you can spend on a mortgage. If you have developed bad spending habits, you may need to improve your credit before moving forward.
- Do some research. A little Googling will show you what homes in your desired area are currently selling for. Make sure that you are comparing apples to apples, i.e. properties of a similar size, location and value.
- Work with a Raleigh real estate agent! Most home sellers, realtors and loan officers would rather work through a realtor than interact directly with a buyer. A realtor is well-versed in the home buying process, and is prepared for the fine print and legalities involved. A realtor can also provide you expert guidance and secure a more competitive offer.
